「人間の諸思考について、私はそれらを、相互依存において、考察しようと思う。まず単独では、それらはひとつひとつ、われわれの外部にある物体の、ある性質あるいは他の偶有性の表象また現われであり、この物体はふつう、対象とよばれる。その対象が、目や耳やその他の人体の諸部分に作用し、そして作用の多様性によって、現象の多様性を生み出すのである。Singly, they are every one a Representation or Appearance, of some quality, or other Accident of a body without us; which is commonly called an Object.
